Portrait Photography: The Best Favor?

As a wedding planner, I often hear “What favors should I get my guests? What would they actually like?”

There’s a good reason to ask this!

Most wedding favors are left behind, making them one of the single biggest “take it or leave it” options when I talk to clients about their budgets.

But what about a favor that everyone loves and fits into the Photography budget?

Portrait photography as a favor is a new trend that is picking up steam, and for good reason: how often are your guests dressed up as nice as they are on your wedding day? Giving them free professional shots that they can use on their social media (even their LinkedIn, depending on the attire) or have as a printout with their plus one is a sweet gift.

If this interests you, ask your photographer if they’re willing to do this, or to add it on to an existing contract. Ask them for advice on when to do this during the wedding (I’d recommend fitting this in during the reception, but would be even better during the cocktail hour if they have a second shooter), and where they’d recommend doing this.

One important note: If they have a second shooter, this is a good option. I don’t recommend doing portrait photography if your photographer is alone! (I assume you want photos of you and your new spouse on your wedding day!).

Your venue’s coordinator can give suggestions on the “where” too— don’t be afraid to reach out! Lounging areas, bars (for a busy backdrop), gardens, archways, and beaches are all fantastic places for this type of photography.

But make sure it’s in an area where guests can see it (or there’s very good signage): otherwise they may totally forget it’s there!

Make sure to have your DJ mention it at the beginning and middle of the reception.

If you’re thinking “But I also have a photobooth- why would I want this too?” that’s totally valid.

Consider your priorities and budget here. Adding on portrait photography may be cheaper than getting a photobooth, or vice-versa depending on your photographer/photobooth company.

Another thing to consider is vibe: photobooths are fun and goofy, while a portrait photographer’s aim is to make your guests look amazing. One is classy and elegant, the other will make your guests laugh. Either way, both are excellent options, and they are not mutually exclusive: you can absolutely have both if your budget allows!

If you’re interested in a photobooth, K.S.Otter Events LLC offers one!

Either way, portrait photography is an awesome party favor!

With love,

Katie
